What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient Indian system for developing perfect health. It is wonderful exercise for the body and the mind. The practice of the yoga poses helps maintain or restore physical, physiological, and mental well being. The active poses emphasize the balance of strength and flexibility while maintaining correct spinal alignment. The restorative poses create a state of relaxation and subsequently a feeling of increased energy.
What is Iyengar Yoga?
Iyengar yoga is based on the work of B.K.S. Iyengar, world-renowned Yoga master and author of many books, including Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on Ashtanga Yoga. Mr. Iyengar was born in 1918 in India and currently resides in Pune, India where he teaches hundreds of students weekly at the Ramanani Memorial Institute. To this day, he maintains an active daily practice.
The Iyengar approach is internationally respected for both vigorous style and in-depth understanding of physical movement. The style is a precise blend of strength/stamina, balance, flexibility, and awareness. Iyengar yoga teaches correct alignment of the spine and limbs in all poses. The method is safe and orderly. Students are taught a progressive series of postures in each of the different level classes. The postures are adjusted to meet the specific conditions of each student. Mr. Iyengar pioneered the use of props such as straps, blankets, blocks, bolsters, and chairs to help students achieve precise postures safely and completely according to their particular body types and needs.
Yoga is a comprehensive system of self-care that can provide an engaging practice for a lifetime. Dedicated students will enjoy an enhanced sense of well-being and relaxation.
